Phoenix will house the three-day 2025 Technology Workshop: Shaping the Future of Advancing Electronics and Medical Technology conference

PHOENIX (April 1, 2025) — Greater Phoenix has emerged as a hub of medical device manufacturing driven by its strong healthcare ecosystem and growth in semiconductor capacity. To propel this momentum and accelerate innovation, the region will host the 2025 Technology Workshop: Shaping the Future of Advancing Electronics and Medical Technology from April 22-24 at Arizona State University (ASU) Health Futures Conference Center.

This three-day conference, presented by SEMI and the Medical Device Manufacturing Multiplier Consortium (MDM2), will bring together clinical perspectives on the convergence of technologies, medical devices and healthcare. It will also address advancements, challenges and gaps in critical technologies such as hybrid and flexible hybrid electronics and bio-signal sensing.

“Over the last 10 years, we have seen smart implantables and wearables work their way too slowly into the practice of medicine,” said Mayo Clinic neurosurgeon Dr. Jonathon Parker, a member of MDM2 and SEMI Smart MedTech Industry Group. “Greater Phoenix’s wide breadth of know-how in semiconductors, device manufacturing and development, and clinical enterprises can catalyze more rapid growth and bring together industry, engineers, clinicians and capital which will help the region build the strongest medtech ecosystem in the United States.”

SEMI, an internationally renowned semiconductor industry organization, will lead its annual technical gap analysis for flexible hybrid electronics and human performance monitoring and augmentation, which lays the groundwork for the upcoming R&D Request for Proposals (RFP). MDM2, a consortium of higher education, industry, workforce training, venture development, philanthropy and government entities led by the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC), will host a keynote presentation and panel discussions focused on clinical topics including oncology, stroke, and neurosciences.

“As a global industry connector, SEMI bridges the semiconductor and medical technology sectors through Smart MedTech,” said SEMI Sr. Director of R&D Programs Gity Samadi, PhD. “Our member-driven vision is to democratize healthcare through innovation. In collaboration with MDM2, we are addressing key challenges in next-generation medical devices to accelerate real-world applications and improve patient outcomes.”

Approximately 200 industry and academic leaders, innovators and stakeholders will be in attendance across the conference. Participants will also have opportunities to tour Medtronic and network with local and out-of-state participants at evening receptions at the new Integrated Education and Research Building (IERB) hosted by Mayo Clinic, the Phoenix Bioscience Core and Venture Cafe during the week.

“In just the past few years, the Greater Phoenix medtech ecosystem has made remarkable progress, from innovative medical device startups to the launch of a healthcare- and life sciences-exclusive venture fund,” said Yoo & Co Accelerators CEO Chris Yoo, MDM2 Regional Innovation Officer. “It’s time to double down on the investments made in the clinical expertise of our healthcare partners, the next-generation capabilities of cutting-edge biomaterials, and the precision and scale of microfabrication from our local semiconductor industry to build upon the strengths of the semiconductor industry and propel the translation of clinical research into real-world advancements.

Medical devices, which constitute implants, wearables and sensors, allow for improved health outcomes and patient care. MDM2 is leveraging the connection of semiconductors and smart medical tech to accelerate regional economic growth in partnership with industry leaders including Medtronic, Abbott Laboratories, W.L. Gore & Associates, Dexcom, and West Pharmaceuticals. MDM2 brings together expertise in research and clinical institutions including Mayo Clinic, Barrow Neurological Institute, HonorHealth, BIO5 and ASU Health Futures to accelerate late-stage translational activities in critical areas such as neurological, cardiovascular, and oncology.

“Billions of dollars of investment into Greater Phoenix’s healthcare and semiconductor industries have positioned the region to become a leader in medtech innovation,” said GPEC President & CEO Chris Camacho. “This conference will bring together some of the industry’s brightest minds and drive conversations to help companies and startups strategize on how they can find success while advancing health outcomes.”

The SEMI-MDM2 conference will offer opportunities for industry leaders to network, connect, and exchange insights on emerging technologies, investment trends, and clinical partnership opportunities. Attendees can register online.
