Meet Maricopa-based artist Shelley Wrixon featured in our Snapshot of Greater Phoenix Exhibit

What do you find most rewarding about being an artist in Greater Phoenix?

I have found the arts community in Greater Phoenix to be very accessible. There are a wide variety of art venues and events taking place at all times. The ability and relative ease to contribute has provided me with the validation that fuels my motivation to create and share my art.

How do you perceive the role of arts and culture within our community?

I believe that art can shape a community in that it provides a conduit for individuals to connect with each other. This connection can facilitate engagement and cooperation, bringing people together. Art also serves to beautify the community and can create a sense of community pride.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene?

I would advise any aspiring artist to register with Artlink as an “Articipant.” This organization provides invaluable information about art events taking place throughout Greater Phoenix. Artlink also importantly lists “Calls for Art” where you can submit your work for consideration. I would also recommend joining a local art group or club. These groups offer fellowship and developmental support from your peers.

If given the chance, which famous artist—living or deceased—would you choose to have dinner with, and which local restaurant would you take them to?

I would love to have dinner with Antoni Gaudi, an architect from Barcelona, Spain. His most prominent creations are Sagrada Familia and Park Guel in Barcelona. He is known for his extensive use of mosaics in his structures. I think I would choose Kai as it showcases southwestern cuisine and is representative of Arizona.

When you’re facing a creative block, where do you typically seek inspiration?

I often draw inspiration by getting out of my studio and looking for new materials to use in my mosaics. That can involve walking outdoors looking for unique natural materials that I can incorporate into my pieces or wandering through thrift stores looking for unique glass pieces that I can break up and use in a project.
