Meet Scottsdale-based artist Ellen MacEwan featured in our Snapshot of Greater Phoenix Exhibit

What do you find most rewarding about being an artist in Greater Phoenix?

Greater Phoenix has a beautifully vibrant art scene. I love to see what other artists are making and get inspired, and I love that there are so many opportunities for the broader community to see and appreciate art, not only visual art but also music, theater, dance and more.

How do you perceive the role of arts and culture within our community?

Art brings people together and helps them connect with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. I think art is one of the best ways for people to bring their experiences to life and share them with others. Art can speak where words fail.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene?

There are so many events in Greater Phoenix where you can see amazing art and talk with local artists! Check out the First Friday Art Walk (or any of the Art Walks in the metro area) or one of the many arts festivals and fairs, and don’t be afraid to talk to the artists whose work inspires you. On top of that, look for opportunities to get your art seen.

If given the chance, which famous artist—living or deceased—would you choose to have dinner with, and which local restaurant would you take them to?

I’d love to have dinner with either Jo Taylor, who is a master of contemporary equine art, or Laura Horn, whose abstract botanicals never fail to inspire me. I’d take them to Andreoli Italian Grocer for the best homemade pasta, panini and tiramisu!

When you’re facing a creative block, where do you typically seek inspiration?

I find my greatest inspiration outdoors. The desert landscape is so inspiring with its raw beauty. Those motifs and color palettes often find their way into my work. Another place I find inspiration is my daughter. At 2, she already loves art, and she is so free and uninhibited when creating—I aspire to be like her! In general, the experience of motherhood has made me more intuitive and expressive in my own art practice and feels like a constant source of inspiration.
