Meet Gilbert-based artist Christina Rosepapa featured in our Snapshot of Greater Phoenix Exhibit

What do you find most rewarding about being an artist in Greater Phoenix?

As an Arizona artist and resident for over 16 years, I continue to be impressed with how much the art scene in Greater Phoenix has grown over the years. From the vibrant city and diverse communities, the art scene reflects the originality that is found in Greater Phoenix. I personally find my own inspiration for my art from the festivals, local galleries and outdoor places of interest.

How do you perceive the role of arts and culture within our community?

The role of arts in Greater Phoenix is evolving. Sixteen years ago the art scene was not flourishing as much as it is now. I think as the art scene continues to grow, Greater Phoenix will become more of a hub for the arts.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene?

I see so much variety in the local art scene. My advice is that there is room for everyone that wants to be a part of it. Be willing to put yourself out there and be seen! It can feel intimating, however aspiring artists can bring their own unique perspective. Art has a way of bringing people together and strengthening deeper appreciation and understanding.

If given the chance, which famous artist—living or deceased—would you choose to have dinner with, and which local restaurant would you take them to?

I am a big Frida Kahlo fan. She was remarkable for her themes in her artwork and her personal perseverance. I would take Frida to one of my favorite restaurants which is close to the Mesa Arts Center, República Empanada. The food is unique and delicious and the vibe – so creative!

When you’re facing a creative block, where do you typically seek inspiration?

When I have a creative block, I can find inspiration hiking and the local art galleries. There is so much color, texture and contrast in the desert. I also enjoy art galleries and local festivals that always inspire me.
