Military Installations
With its diverse network of military installations located across the state, including large areas of associated airspace, Arizona provides the U.S. Department of Defense with high-quality, cost-effective and weather-friendly training facilities. Accordingly, the military has become one the biggest producers of Arizona jobs.
- Luke Air Force Base, located in Glendale, is the only active duty F-16 training base in the world. Every F-16 pilot who has fought in Afghanistani and Iraqi missions was trained at Luke AFB. The base also plays a significant role in the state's economic viability. It employs roughly 7,500 individuals and services an additional 95,000 military family members and retired military personnel.
- Yuma's Marine Corps Air Station (in southern Arizona) was established in 1928. It served as an air base during World War II and later became one of the nation's busiest flying schools.
- Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson (southern Arizona), is named for two local military aviators who died in crashes - 1st Lt Samuel H. Davis and 2nd Lt Oscar Monthan. The base was activated in 1924 and is now home to the 355th Fighter Wing.
